Activity:Today we are going to explore our local community. For this activity, you will need Google Maps (ask a parent first if you can use it.)You are going to choose a few different places to go to in our local community, and have a look at a map of Carrum Downs and surrounding places, and find out the ways to get there.Open your favourite search engine (such as Google Chrome), search Google Maps, and you will have a screen that looks like the picture below. In the top left I’ve drawn a red circle where you search for Carrum Downs and the map will appear. Use the + key in the right corner of the map to zoom in. Do you see our school? Can you find your street? Your house? A friend’s house? Your local playground?
See Attachment 1
Have an explore of the map and see what you can find. If you’re finding it a bit tricky ask an adult nicely to help you.For another challenge, next you’re going to explore the Directions feature. This tells you how to get to different places. Click on the BLUE circle on the left of your screen.Type in your street name on the top line and where you want to go (like Rowellyn Park PS). I chose to go from school to Carrum Downs Library. After doing that, click on the picture of the person walking, and see what happens. It will draw a route from start to finish for you. It will also tell you how far it is, and the time it takes to get there! How amazing is that!Your screen will look like this the picture below.
See Attachment 2
Share what you’ve found out with someone else. Show them how to use the Directions button.Have a go at finding out the paths from places you go to in Carrum Downs, and how far it is. You could even see if it’s the same way you take! For an extra challenge, you could estimate how far you think the route is before you type it in. You may even choose write what you find out. Have fun exploring! Share what you find out with your teacher at your WebEx session! Have fun!
