Learning Intention:
To develop a plan for a design using a diagram with labels.

Hi Grade 6,

Welcome to the second lesson in the unit Junk Design Challenge. We will continue to redesign objects that were going into landfill, and give them a new purpose. The STEAM focus is creating a ‘useful’ item out of ‘useless junk’.

Last week you collected items of ‘junk’ around the house. You also brainstormed a list of things you could redesign the objects into.

This week you will chose one of the ideas from your brainstormed list. Using the junk you collected last week, draw a diagram of the re-purposed items, outlining a plan of your new designed object. Show how your new design will look and what it will do? Draw the junk or the junk parts in position and label the parts of your new object. You can do this on any paper and using any drawing materials you like (pencils, texta, grey  lead). Keep your plan, ready for construction next week.

I have added an example by Nicole. Like the example, you should label the junk you will be using. For example, Nicole’s plan shows she will use old chicken wire, ribbon from presents and cut up old clothes to make a dream catcher. It shows the pattern she will aim to achieve.

When you are ready, click on the video to watch some inspirational ideas to get you thinking about your own design.

Next week we will begin building our designs. Eventually I will be asking you to take a photo of your creations to share with me. This will be at the end. At the moment you will not need to submit anything. Feel free to email me with any questions on compass.

Junk Design Challenge

Learning Intention:
To re-purpose an item of junk for reducing, reusing and recycling.
To create a designed solution and construct it using materials.

Hi Grade 6,

This is the 3rd lesson for our unit on the Junk Design Challenge. In this lesson, you will continue to redesign objects that were going into landfill, and give them a new purpose. The STEAM focus is creating a ‘useful’ item out of ‘useless junk’.

So far you have collected items of ‘junk’ around the house. You also brainstormed a list of things you could redesign the objects into. Then you did a drawing of a diagram of the re-purposed items, outlining a plan of your new designed object.

This week you will start constructing your Junk Design Challenge. You may need binding materials and/ or equipment (scissors, tape, staplers and anything else that can help in construction). Use your drawing to help guide you. Of course this may change as you’re building and problem solving.

Some of you have already finished yours. Vansh and Charlotte were happy to share there’s with you. Take a look at what they have created (see Vansh’s video and Charlotte’s photo )….

When you are finished constructing yours, I’d love to see them. Take a photo and use the submit task on compass to add your photo. I will be able to access them and take a look at what you created. I look forward to seeing your Junk re-designed!!
